Educating Students for Success in a Changing World

Virtual Instruction Days

Virtual Instruction Days

A Virtual Instructional Day is a day when school districts (and school entities) can use an alternative approach to deliver instruction if a circumstance arises that prevents instruction in the customary manner. School districts must apply to PDE and, upon approval, are awarded five (5) Flexible Instructional Days for a three-year period (5 days each school year for three years). Here are the procedures California Area School District will follow:

A one-call will be sent to all staff, students and parents/guardians indicating that a flexible instructional day will be used. When a Flexible Instructional Day is implemented, staff will complete an online Google Form by 9:00 a.m. to record their attendance. If the staff member needs to call off, they will use the same system established by the District. Teachers will have from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. for the preparatory time. From 10:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m., teachers will be available for synchronous and asynchronous instruction. A universal lunch time will be from 11:45 - 12:15 for teachers. From 12:15 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., teachers will be available for synchronous and asynchronous instruction. The school day will be implemented like a typical two-hour delay on an adjusted Virtual Instructional Day schedule. Student attendance will be recorded through an online Google Form or by calling an automated system for recording attendance. Student attendance will be electronically disseminated to the teachers through the student information system.

A school schedule outlines a flexible instruction day with block times and activities.

Flexible Instructional Day

    1. Include information on Flexible Instructional Days in the Student Handbook.
    2. Maintain a district-level Google Classroom Code Spreadsheet for Full Year, Semester 1 and Semester 2 classes.
    3. Review staff attendance and ensure accuracy.
    4. Communicate means with the staff to contact us to troubleshoot any issues
    5. Assign paraprofessional duties
    6. Monitor expectations on assignments, grading, etc.
    7. Monitor and adjust to any necessary secondary plans due to power outages, staff attendance, etc.
    8. Conduct a “Mock FID Day” at the start of the school year and at the semester change when students are experiencing face-to-face instruction to ensure all students know how to record attendance and access Google Classroom.
    1. Provide your child a safe place to do FID work. Guardians or caretakers are available.
    2. Parents are expected to monitor students' attendance during FID. Login is important for state reporting attendance.
    3. Parents are encouraged to verify their child’s work is completed.
    4. Parents are expected to communicate if there are any connectivity issues with the district.
    1. Be available to take phone call attendance and record student attendance in the mass spreadsheet.
    2. Distribute student attendance after 10:00 a.m. to all staff.
    1. Use your common preparatory time to prepare lessons and post them to Google Classroom. All lessons and assignments must be posted by 10:00 a.m. to Google Classroom.
    2. Prepare quality lessons within the traditional timeline of the curriculum. The amount of time to complete the lesson and necessary work should not exceed a traditional face-to-face class time.
    3. Utilize student email or messages in Google Classroom in order to communicate with students.
    4. From 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., be available for synchronous and asynchronous instruction. A universal lunch time will be from 11:45 - 12:15 for teachers. From 12:15 p.m. - 3:15 p.m., be available for synchronous and asynchronous instruction. Be available to answer student emails and synchronous video calls throughout the day.
    5. Do not report to the building, unless you need access to the Internet or power.
    6. Provide students 3 days to complete the work you assigned on a FID day.
    1. Record your attendance through the Google Form by 10:00 a.m.
    2. Complete your work at home with the time you have available.
    3. Communicate any issues with technology or access to your teacher.
    4. You will have three days to make up work. If you are unable to complete the work on the day of the FID day, you have three days to turn in your assignment.
